Update re RLDA Financials
There's been some buzz lately about loan + tax payments on the land owned by the RLDA.
1. The Province is looking to be repaid money approved for our 2008 land purchase.
· Our Board Members are working with a number of groups to find a solution that keeps the Rocky Lake Dome Arena in operation after the end of this season.
· We're still working with the Daniel Nestor Tennis Centre to bring a world-class indoor tennis centre to Atlantic Canada.
· And we're still planning to meet the need for community-focused recreational facilities on this site.
· Rest assured - our current loan payment negotiations won't affect Dome Operations or ice time schedules in any way.
2. We're appealing our tax categorization
· The Dome is the only non-profit recreation facility in the Province which is taxed - all similar recreational facilities are tax exempt or receive grants in lieu.
· Since 2008 we've been taxed at a full commercial rate despite covenants restricting the land to recreational use.
· We're appealing this oversight and will pay taxes owing as soon as the correct amount is calculated.
· The Dome is commercially viable and remains open for business.
3. We're very proud of the Rocky Lake Dome.
· Since November 2009 it has provided desperately-needed space for minor hockey, ringette, ball hockey and lacrosse leagues from Bedford, Sackville, Fall River and Waverly.
· Even with the opening of the BMO 4-pad, we've booked 100% of our prime ice time. The Dome benefits from great management, loyal and hardworking staff and enthusiastic user groups.
· It's well-used and breaks even, and there are no plans to change ownership, access or management.
4. We're working hard to find a solution to our current financial situation, and we'll let you know as soon as we find one.
Please keep enjoying the Rocky Lake Dome. We look forward to providing great recreational opportunities for years to come.
