History

The Rocky Lake Development Association (“RLDA”) is a non-profit organization formed under the Societies Act of Nova Scotia on May 22, 2002. Our primary purpose is the development of community recreational lands, with the recognition that sport and recreation are the essential building blocks for a healthier and happier lifestyle. RLDA has a strong commitment to make a difference in our communities.

The Burke Oliver Report, prepared in 1992 by the Town of Bedford and later adopted by HRM, recognized that development in the area had created a shortage of rink ice time, and that few recreational facilities were available to serve the growing population.  In 2007, the Province of Nova Scotia loaned RLDA $1,500,000 to complete a purchase agreement with the landowner, St Paul’s Home, for 50 acres of land in an area called Rocky Lake Commons. In 2008, Lydon Lynch was engaged to prepare a site plan design and a field house plan. The Province of Nova Scotia saw the value of this facility and campus plan and in 2009 gave the Association a grant of $1,000,000 to carry on its work.

A final grant was given to Rocky Lake Development Association by the Federal Government ( ACOA) in March 2009. This allowed the Dome rink to be completed and ready for the 2009-2010 Hockey season. The rink was the completion of Phase one.

With a 3-Phase Development Plan, we have been singularly focused on and proudly successful in bringing recreational facilities to our communities. Since its opening on November 1, 2009, the Rocky Lake Dome Arena has served over 50,000 children and adults, and operates year-round as a financially viable centre.

Today, the RLDA is well-positioned to continue our strategic development of Rocky Lake Commons. Throughout the process we have identified some challenges but we have also identified opportunities to overcome them. We are confident that we will fulfill our mandate to deliver first-class recreational facilities to our communities.
